Volunteers are an important part of your team

For some, volunteering is a once in a lifetime experience, many experiences with different organisations or an ongoing volunteering position with a selected organisation.

To ensure volunteers come back to your event or commit to future volunteering with your organisation you have a responsibility to provide valuable volunteering opportunities.

Volunteers enter a partnership with you to become a representative of your organisation. They will only be a good or great representative if you equip them with the skills and knowledge required to do so.

Rewarding volunteers

Volunteers bring an enormous amount of value to your event by providing their time, skills and energy and it is important to reward them. Let volunteers know they are valued by treating them as part of the team and by providing them with the training and tools they need to carry out their role.

There are many things you can do to reward volunteers – here are some ideas:

  • Say thank you
  • Talk about their experience
  • Arrange a wrap party or annual celebration
  • Provide tickets to the event or provide gifts
  • Publically and privately recognise volunteers
  • Include volunteers as part of your organisation
  • Hold a competition with a major prize for volunteers
  • Have an award/s for volunteer/s and include volunteers in the selection
  • Be creative and reward volunteers in a unique way that will resonate and motivate them to come back and volunteer next year
  • Provide volunteers with feedback about the event, for example, set up a closed Facebook group and share photos from the event
